The recent decision by a grand jury to drop murder charges against a teenager accused of fatally shooting a store clerk in Humble has sparked significant reactions from local activists and community leaders.

During a press conference, defense attorney Lott Brooks and civil rights leader Quanell X addressed the outcome of the case and shared important messages for the community.

“Silly, foolish, adolescent, ignominious behavior can get you caught up in something that can rob you for the rest of your life,” emphasized Quanell X, urging young people to be mindful of their actions.

The case revolved around 17-year-old Mario Young, who was cleared of all charges when the grand jury returned a “no bill” decision. This ruling effectively dismissed the murder charge against him, offering relief to Young and his supporters.

Brooks, Young’s defense attorney, spoke about the emotional strain his client has endured. “He is very unhappy with what happened to that man,” Brooks remarked, referring to the tragic death of 42-year-old Asif Maknojia in January.

According to court documents, Maknojia had pursued Young and another teenager after they allegedly stole a bag of chips. Quanell X argued that the situation escalated when Maknojia approached the teenagers with a gun, leading to a self-defense scenario.

“This man took it upon himself to chase those young men down, approached them with a gun, and it was self-defense, and that’s why both of these young men were exonerated,” -Quanell X

Community leaders expressed their condolences to the Maknojia family while also expressing relief over the grand jury’s decision.

Dr. Candice Matthews, speaking on the consequences of poor decisions, warned, “You have to make the right choices because one wrong decision will haunt you for the rest of your life.”

Quanell X echoed her sentiments, adding a call to action for the community: “Brothers got to get some jobs or make some jobs for yourself. Let’s not make excuses for criminal behavior.”

Young’s mother, Precious Ferguson emphasized that he is in dire need of counseling. The gravity of his condition underscores the urgency for professional support to help him navigate through this difficult period, with counseling deemed essential for his recovery and stability. This case shows the complex interplay between youth behavior, community responses, and the legal system, highlighting the importance of guidance and support for young people in navigating their choices.
